Product tattoo… would you?

tattoo-products

If you love great product design, what better way to show it, than to have it as a tattoo on your body. The drawings above belongs to Magnus one of our former colleagues that dropped by the Normann Copenhagen HQ today. His first tattoo was the Jaguar E.

What about the cute Woofy dog, the siluet of the famous Norm 69 lamp or  go for the full monty with the complete Camping series. You decide. Just promise to contact Michael first so that we can agree on the terms, and so that you don’t end up with a fake product tattoo.

Football: I have no clue – do you?

Football

I don’t really care for football or soccer as they call it in the US. Most Danes love the game – so living in a football happy country can sometimes be a bit… difficult. Today two pair of Reebok Valde Pro HG size 42 (Yellow as seen below or blue) landed on my desk along with a press release about the chap above.  I could tell that he was a football player, but had no clue about his name, his club or number of you-must-have-seen-his-total-awesome goals.

I am not going to use the boots, you can have them. How to win:

1. Click on the comment link above
2. Write his name
In case of more than two correct answers I will draw among the correct answers. I will send the Reebok shoes this friday (17th of July), so hurry if you want new shoes for the game next weekend!

P.s. The girls at the Normann Copenhagen HQ thinks that he is cute, so more pictures of him has been added below. Continue reading ‘Football: I have no clue – do you?’

Designers from 28 to 87

We would like to tell you a story about the people that make our Normann Copenhagen design.

No insiders
First of all we don´t have in-house designers at Normann Copenhagen. What unites us is a love for a particular product and that we share some of the same DNA when it comes to passion, having fun and doing business.

A lifespan
Our youngest designer is Britt Kornum. Britt has not even turned 30 summers yet, but has already proven that she is a great design talent and a very nice person to be around. Our oldest designer is Herbert Krenchel, he is 87 and is launching his latest product within a couple of months.

Pro. VS amateur
We don´t have a politic at Normann Copenhagen that you have to be a professional designer to work for us. In fact some of our best selling products are designed by individuals without any formal design education. However we encourage young designlovers to learn the trade from others. This is also why we participate in the “Time to design – new talent award” as well as coaching design students from the Danish Design School.

Global thinking
Growing up in a very small country you learn that if you wish to succeed large scale, you have to collaborate. Our designers live all over the world. This means that we get input and inspiration from many different angels. It´s really interesting to find out that you have more in (design) common with a person from Taiwan or Greece than you do with you next door neighbor.

For us great design has nothing to do with age, sex, religion or anything else – all that matters is that we fall in love with your design and that we got great chemistry.

Mmm… lovely cups

1You cannot get around Marianne Viktor and her beautiful design of ceramics and mixed materials if you love unique design in your daily life. For example her cups makes you even more pleased drinking coffee. The oblique sliced edge at the top of the cup makes it possible to hold it although it’s filled with warm tea or coffee. Do you speak Designísh?

designish

This is Peter and Hirai san. They dont speak each others language. Mr. Hirai san is Japanise and has a very succesfull online stor in Japan called Scope. Peter is our Sales Manager here at Normann Copenhagen. They have met each other many times and they always have a ball together, even without alcohol! How is that possible? Well they speak the same universal language of love for design – and stories. They think alike and even though their cultures are very different they understand and learn from each other…pretty cool when you see them in action.

Scope created this “family icon” that you can find on their homepage… which we only understand thanks to Google Translate

Designer nerds

designer-nerds

This is the Danish designer Jesper K. Thomsen and the Italian designer Odoardo Fioravanti. Last Friday the two met for a talk about Jesper new furniture series – Camping and Play. It was really interesting to hear that even though they don’t speak the same language they still have a common language when it comes to design.  The rest of us “non-designers” felt totally left behind when the two of them got all excited about some new update for a 3D program. We were fascinated by how much they had in common even though their design solutions are miles apart.

Don´t take his picture

fukusawa

This weekend we got to meet a very special designer in Stockholm – Mr. Fukusava. In a very trendy design store in the center of Stockholm he presented his new range of products called  +0. Very minimalistic and very beautiful.

We kindly asked if we could take his picture – for the blog of cause. Mr. Fukusava agreed and here is the result – a fairly good picture. Later on that evening we were approached by one of his staff telling us that we were not suppose to take pictures of the design star, and that we should use a approved and official portrait of Mr. Fukusava instead.  But here it is the picture that newer should have been taken!

Tom Ford

Cover of Tom Ford

Cover of Tom Ford

I reccently (finnaly!) got my copy of Tom Ford sent to me! Although it’s a copy of the second print that was released in the fall, not the prized first edition from a few years back, it’s brilliance goes beyond the fantastic use of Helvetica on the cover.

I’ve always been a huge Tom Ford fan, so I guess I would like the book no matter what, but what did actually surprise me is the “story” in the book, it’s just pictures as I expected. Because thats what makes the Tom Ford story so unique though – the story.  But what’s interesting is not his personal rags-to-riches story (not sure he even has one?), but Gucci’s rags-to-riches story.

tom-ford-3

As a marketer/designer I’ve always been drawn to Ford for that reason – he was a businessman and a designer. And in the fashion space he was second to none at both jobs.  What eventually  made Ford a household name (even beyond design circles) was his ability to seemingly do whatever he wanted (everyone remember the vanity fair cover with Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson?).

tom-ford

The book follows along Ford’s hugley successful, albeit short, career at Gucci and YSL using images taken at the time along with reflective writing. Surly there will be another chapter to this book no matter which way  his career turns. Anyone who’s had the opportunity to visit his store in New York can certainly confirm that he has still got it – although the  pieces are ”out of reach to even then average millionaire” (to use the always wise words of Wallpaper magazine).
