I have seen the future of product design

Last week I attended the Reboot 11 conference held i Copenhagen. Many great talks – and as always – something that stuck out and showed a bit of the future to come. This year the RepRap 3D printer blew my mind. Made as a open source project by geeks across the globe, it is bound to shake the material world as we know it. Old news you may say – the 3D printers has been around for  years. However what makes the RepRap stand out is that this fellow can be put together by a bright high-school student, costs less than 500 euro – and can print virtually anything.

What is the point of printing small plastic things in a bad quality – you may ad. But think about it. 10 years ago a printer was big as a house, could only print in black, in really bad quality, and at a very high cost. Today you can buy a color printer in any grocery store which will print in photo-realistic quality.

Imagine your teenage daughter left you this note after watching the Oscar nomination all night.

Could this be reality within 5 years? Probably. Will it give every lawyer, designer and manufacturer something to think about. Definitely.

If you can imagine it – you can have it.

Kindle = 1 step forward – 2 steps back

kindle

We love the idea of the E-ink book reader, Kindle. The concept of downloading all your reading directly from Amazon is just brilliant, and a perfect match for a (everything for sale) bookstore. Today Amazon launched the next version Kindle DX – faster, bigger, stronger, brighter… you know the tech. song. However the design still reminds us of something a doctor would use in a C-grade sci-fi movie. Yes it’s white and simple… but it is also  - oh – so - boring to look at.

Amazon  has managed to squeeze all the books in the world (almost) into one device. But they have also managed to forget that books is also about the joy of holding something beautiful, soft, almost warm and often covered with interesting design and print.

Our suggestion to Amazon is quite simple. Give your white plastic screen to designers, artists and skilled bookbinders all over the world and see what happens. One thing is for sure. You won’t get a plane white result.

Green Graffiti

I’ve heard about GreenGraffiti last year, but this is the first time I spotted it myself in the streets of Amsterdam! Green graffiti is a simple but brilliant concept using only a template, water and a spraying system to ‘clean’ advertising messages out of the dirty street. Fun, completely carbon neutral and a cleaner street, what more can you ask for?

Digital Spring!

Do you know that Spring 2009 is on Facebook? Isn’t it every Scandinavian’s dream to be friends with her?? She seems like such a sweet person and I hope she will accept my friend request!

p.s.  no gold award was given in the branding category, but NikeWoman was a bit faster than Normann Copenhagen. Respect to you.

We could look at this for hours…

We are so fascinated by real craftsmanship. Last week we had the chance to film Ole Jensen while he was making a limited number of Familia cups, jugs and teapots for our Japanese friends.

P.s. If you are expecting a high pace video please don’t click the Play bottom, because all you are going to see for the next 4 minutes is Ole Jensen, his hands and a lump of clay.

Less is… much more

ipod-shuffle

Apple just launched their new iPod Shuffle and it´s beautiful… that is if you can find it! From a design point of view we are true fans of this company that keeps setting new standards for tech design.

The secret behind Danish design revealed today

egg-chair

How come that a very small country in the cold north has managed to produce some true icons within architecture and design (e.g. Sydney Opera house and the Egg chair). Well today is the day where we reveal the Danish secret – we open up the closet and let you peak into the wizards lab.

Minimalism can be fun!

car1

Sometimes it’s the simplest things that are the most fun. Like the time I gave my son a huge and expensive action-man (Polar edition) set. It turned out that setting all the small plastic parts free, was not a kids job. While I was busy with scissors my son had taken the carton box and was turning it into a really cool galactic interplanetary spaceship. So last week when this little metal car arrived at my desk it reminded me that things don’t have to be big and loud to be fun. The metal car is handmade by Mr. Jesco von Puttkamer from Switzerland. Watch the video below and see how much fun a piece of metal can be.

p.s. the car can be yours. Just write your name in the comments field (above) and I will draw a winner on Monday. And yes it comes in its own perfect interplanetary spaceship box.
