Meet tomorrow’s designers – today

Carlsberg’s raw warehouse at Pasteursvej 4, currently form the framework for the Danish Design Schools annual graduate show. It is an exhibition where the 75 new design talents have the opportunity to show their talent to the public.

This year’s concept is based on the term FAQ, which refers to a list of frequently asked questions about a given topic and replies. We often ask the same questions and therefore are the response from the designer interesting for many.

Many found their way into the raw warehouse, despite the very rainy weather.

Dis[Play] by Lena Vogelius is a multifunctional furniture that is a reminiscent of an accordion as it can be pulled together. Dis[Play] is found to rethink traditional storage methods and the way we use them.

Traffic design – the Danish way

How do you get more people to ride their bikes in the city? – you simply design the streets so they reflect how you would like the traffic to flow. This picture above is from Store Kongensgade – a street which will take you straight  to the very center of Copenhagen (Kongens Nytorv)… nothing interesting about that! But take a closer look at the dividing white line on the pavement. Busses and bikes co-exist in the wide lane where as the cars have to settle with just one narrow lane… which is probably the reason why it’s much faster to get around Copenhagen by bike than by car… now you know!

Guess a Designer?

At Normann Copenhagen we love great design, also if it is not our own. Can you guess who the designer behind these lamps is?

Heima, wir lieben dich

In February 2010 the Heima candlestick won the  world-famous design competition IF Product Design Award 2010. Today we got a very nice letter saying that Heima is nominated for the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany 2011. The Design Award is the highest official recognition for design excellence in Germany… which makes us quite proud. Way to go Heima, wir drücken die Daumen.

Watch a video interview with the Francis Cayouette where he talks about the Heima design.

What does your work smell like?

At Normann Copenhagen we love flowers (Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C). Yesterday we spotted this flower facade right in the center of Copenhagen (Kongens Nytorv).

More companies should seize the idea and hide their boring grey concrete facades behind a curtain of flowers… would make everybody happier and the company smell better.

Tonight at 20.30  (Copenhagen time) its Earth Hour and people across the globe will turn their light off for an hour. We think its a great way to put focus on our enviroment and of course to have fun in the dark!

Don´t want to be left in the “spotlight” and be better at turning off the light… every day. Need a bit of help? Head for our homepage where we have prepared a live demo with two of our most popular lamps. The Norm 69 lamp and the Norm 03. See you in the dark.

Normann Copenhagen wins social media award

Last night, we attended the Danish e-business award show hosted by FDIH at the beautiful old Danish stock exchange in Copenhagen. We were nominated in the category: Social Media… and won. We are proud to be recognized for our use of online media, but to be honest, the real award is how much closer the use of online technology has brought us to… you.

Have a nice weekend

Reach for the stars… literally

Ever heard the expression “Reach for the stars” – well someone took it quite literally with the Burj Khalifa building. Our dear CEO Poul witnessed the opening ceremony of the tallest building in the world and according to his live blog reporting its “F…… amazing”.

And the winner is…

The winner of the “Be creative and win” – 2009 is the fantastic picture “Cold” by Sena C.

The sick Familia cup made us want to curl up under our Plaid with a cup of hot Choclate, especially these days when Copenhagen is ice cold and covered in snow. This picture encourages for some “local warming” at home.

There can only be one ! But we fell in love with this picture of a dog digging in the Spine Rug, so we made up a new price “The Creative Ninja ‘Award” that goes to ; Hannah L for “Hiding”

We love great design

Normann Copenhagen is a way of living - a mindset. We like to think of it as putting on a pair of glasses and seeing the world in a different way. We love to challenge the conventional design rules.

On this blog we write about our design, the designers, and interesting things we spot around our hometown - Copenhagen.

Enjoy
Normann Copenhagen
