This year’s award ceremony will take place on Thursday 26^th of August at 2pm to 4pm at the Danish Art Workshops and you are invited. At the premises at Strandgade 27B, Director of the Danish Art Workshops Frederik Hardvendel will welcome you to this year’s award ceremony followed by a panel discussion ”Design Your Career”.

The panel will have a discussion about how you make it in the design business. With a panel consisting of one from the producer side, one from the design side and one from the consulting industry, the discussion provides different angles on how to make it as a designer. An issue which may have multiple answers, depending on which side of the industry you are from.

After the winner has been announced, the winner presents the winning project – we can’t wait!

Time to design is a design award with a focus on young design talents and their special needs. It is about finding their foothold in the design industry and knowledge thereof. Time to Design is a platform for the growing talents, a platform that can lead to a professional career.

The price includes three months residency at the Danish Art Work­shops, 50.000 DKK sponsored by TA, the Danish Association of Wood and Furniture Industries to cover material costs, in­dividual career coaching by OeO, and two weeks exhibition at the Normann Copenhagen Flagship Store

We are working on preparing everything for our upcoming exhibition of Tom Dixon’s Industry Collection and we found a few things that we did not know about Tom Dixon – do you?

• Did you know that Tom Dixon was born in Tunisia in 1959, and was brought to England as a toddler where he grew up in London? After dropping out of art school in 1980, he played bass guitar in the band Funkapolitan and organized warehouse parties. While recovering from a motorcycle accident in 1983 he taught himself welding when trying to repair his motorbike, and became a design-maker.

• Did you know that Tom Dixon’s approach to design matched the post-punk mood of the early 1980s, and his name rose to prominence as “the talented untrained designer with a line in welded salvage furniture”? He is now the Creative Director of Tom Dixon and Artek.

• Did you know that Tom Dixon exhibits at major design venues and exhibitions including the Milan Fair and London Design Festival? The brand launches new collections annually at the Milan international furniture fair and the products are sold across 52 countries.

• Did you know that Normann Copenhagen has been selling his products for years, and that his products from the Road Show tour will be exhibited in the shop from August 4 to September 10?

We are proud to announce that Normann Copenhagen has been awarded with yet a design award with the humorously salt and pepper set Dolly from the world-famous design competition red dot design award 2010. Congratulations to the designer Ross McBride for making this great design!

Earlier this year Dolly was awarded with the If product design award 2010.

This time of year is one of our favourite times. Each day new cool design products arrive and yet again the Flagship Store is turned into a Mecca of cool design. Check out these cool colourful displays made by Kristine.

The modern fusion kitchen draws inspiration from the entire world and mixes different cooking traditions together. Just like music. That is why Odoardo Fioravanti has redesigned a series of traditional kitchen utensils. Fusion Cooking consists of a palette, ladle and tongs, useful both for cooking and serving.

Odoardo Fioravanti explains: “My approach towards design is to observe people’s actions and behaviour, although they constantly change. This is the basis for any new concept. As to Fusion Cooking, I had noticed how people mix different food cultures together and I decided to develop some utensils aimed at the fusion kitchen. I wanted traditional utensils to have a new form, which had not been seen before – as if they had evolved and some new species had been created. The name symbolises both the inspiration behind the design, as well as the fusion in the combination of materials.”

This is Peter and Hirai san. They dont speak each others language. Mr. Hirai san is Japanise and has a very succesfull online stor in Japan called Scope. Peter is our Sales Manager here at Normann Copenhagen. They have met each other many times and they always have a ball together, even without alcohol! How is that possible? Well they speak the same universal language of love for design – and stories. They think alike and even though their cultures are very different they understand and learn from each other…pretty cool when you see them in action.

Another example  is when I bought some really nice flowerpots made out of birchtree (they looked like a treelog in fact, very nice!) from my local NETTO store. A Danish friend of mine came by my house and she couldn’t stop laughing, and at first I thought that I, by accident, had bought something that had some kind of special purpose, only I didn’t know about it. Like if the flowerpots were especially made and traditionally used for funerals or something similar!  Imagine the akwardness of that!

Luckily my friend told me that she had never seen that type of pots before, and that she was laughing because she found them truly ugly. 

When I paid the nice lady in the thriftstore the 10 kroners the plate costed she said to me smiling: “You are now more Danish than Swedish”
