Rings made of…

This is Hannah Maj Kragh Bagge, a young design student from The Institute of Fine Metals in Copenhagen. Right now she is exhibiting her work together with fellow students in our Flagship store (address). In the picture above she is holding two rings, one for him and one for her. But what are they made of?

Click below to find the answer… you will probably be surprised!

Subtle insult through art?

Taking a different route can make you spot things you wouldn’t normally see. I work at a very corporate (read boring) part of Amsterdam called Zuidas, where many of the big (bad) banks are located. At the headquarter of controversal bank ABN AMRO I saw these acorns in their office garden earlier this year. In Dutch the word acorn isn’t only fruit from an oak tree, it’s also is an insulting curse word for men (details here). Wonder if they put it there themselves or whether this is a subtle message from someone else?

The Big “Kuglen” (=Ball) is here!

Blog 1

During the Copenhagen Fashion Week and August out, Normann Copenhagen and Nowak cph are asking the question: Can art be cut in pieces and still be art?

Blog 3

With these gorgeous handmade pillows made by Nowak cph – we say YES - of course!  Each pillow is unique and comes in three different sizes .

The art of recycling

It’s always great to see what creativity can do with an already existing product. A perfect example is what readers of this blog did, putting a new perspective on some of Normann Copenhagen’s products.

The artist iri5 took it a step further. Picture this: an old almost extinct product, torn apart and reordered and by doing so creating art. Sounds difficult but looks great!

Bob Dylan portrait © 2009 iri5

Iri5 is an artist who created this portrait by recycling an old cassette tape. She also works with old books, playing cards, magazines and credit cards. Her view on working with old materials is cool:

It feels great to work with strange, older materials. Things that have a mind of their own. Most everything I use has been thrown away or donated at some point. Past its prime, like some of the finest things in the world.

Put Some Type On

As a typography nerd a friend recently asked me what some good places to get posters for his house were. I thought it would be a great idea for a post because I think we’ve all wondered the same thing at some point.

There are literally THOUSANDS of brilliant designers out there  who make amazing art using typography and design. There is absolutely no way I – or anyone else – could ever come up with a comprehensive list. However, i’ve done my best to highlight a FEW sites i’ve come across. I invite anyone to post their favorite sites in the comments – even if it’s your own! (there’s nothing wrong with self promotion!)

Change The Thought - One of my favorite shops, I own several of the limited edition prints. You can also get some of the now iconic Obama posters.

Design Supremo – Pricey but very unique wall art prints.

Walloper – Uses Toronto’s unique subway signage available to put on your wall.

HelveticaFilm –  Some of the superstar designers from the documentary about the typeface lend their skills to what they do best: posters about Helvetica.

MoMA store - The mother of all design/art museums naturally has one of the best online store for posters and prints.

Sam Javanrough – One of my favorite Toronto based photographers. You can purchase prints off his photoblog.

Barcode Plantage – Takes barcodes and makes cool posters out of them which you can download for a few dollars.

Esty – Huge online marketplace where artists can sell their gear. May take some searching but great things to be found.

It’s all about giving!!!

norm03-detail

Right before Christmas we had a very special visitor in our store. It was Alex Tjoa from Switzerland, the winner of our “Be creative and win” competition, who came to claim her prize. Alex won with her picture of the new Norm 03 Steel  lamp which she turned into a beautiful haute couture dress.

We love great design

Normann Copenhagen is a way of living - a mindset. We like to think of it as putting on a pair of glasses and seeing the world in a different way. We love to challenge the conventional design rules.

On this blog we write about our design, the designers, and interesting things we spot around our hometown - Copenhagen.

Enjoy
